How to Report an Outage

What to do in case of power failure:

  1. Check your fuses and/or breaker switches on your side of the meter. If some of your lights work, the trouble is most likely in your own equipment. Remember to check the main cartridge fuses in your fuse box.

  2. If all the lights are off, then check with your neighbor to see if their power is off.

  3.  If you have not found the trouble, call the appropriate number listed below. Be sure to give the name the account is in and the address of the affected property. Please call in as soon as the trouble is discovered.

    • To report an outage or emergency 24/7, call toll free 800-762-7362 or use your SmartHub account.

    • During office hours, you can report your outage by calling 812-295-4200.

If you can’t reach the phone number listed above and it is a life threatening emergency, dial 911.

Outages are unavoidable

While Daviess-Martin County REMC strives to keep power outages to a minimum, they can’t be totally avoided. Storms, animals, accidents, equipment failure, and even human error all are potential factors that cause power outages. If you experience a power outage we make every attempt to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

For members who rely on electricity to power life-support equipment in their homes, such as respirators or kidney dialysis machines, please note that since special needs customers are located throughout our service area, it is not possible to provide restoration priority to these customers following storm outages. It is the customer’s responsibility to make appropriate arrangements in case restoration is delayed.

Prepare Your Home for Outages

  • If someone in your family requires life support equipment, make prior arrangements for a back-up power supply.

  • Remove any debris from storm drains around your home or yard.

  • Prepare a simple emergency kit to include flash lights, first aid kit, supply of non-perishable food items, three-day supply of bottled water, and a cellular phone.
  • Limit the opening of refrigerator or freezer doors during a power outage.
  • Stay away from any downed power lines or hazardous conditions.

When electricity goes out, most of us expect power will be restored in a few hours. But when a major storm causes wide-spread damage, longer outages may result.
