Journeyman Lineman / Apprentice

Major responsibilities include:

  • Performing the required work in connection with the construction, maintenance, operation and service of electric distribution lines, protective equipment, substations and associated equipment owned and operated by the cooperative.

  • Knowing the applicable portions of the National Electric Code, the National Electrical Safety Code and RUS specifications, and other regulatory and/or instructional guides in regard to line construction, service and maintenance while furthering the work team development and skill levels in accordance with established policies, procedures and plans.

This position is included under the cooperative’s collective bargaining unit agreement with the IBEW Local union 1393. 

Preferred candidates will possess the qualifications listed below and be able to perform based on knowledge and proved experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A class “A” CDL is preferred.

  • A Journeyman Lineman position is preferred; however, an apprentice-in-training may be considered.

  • Must be interested in providing superior service to our members and willing to develop in a position which involves increasing responsibilities under the supervision of the Line Superintendent and Director of Operations.

  • Must be a high school graduate. Journeyman lineman applicants must prove their status by having successfully completed a certified journeyman lineman program. 

  • Possess a thorough knowledge of cooperative / RUS distribution line standards, principles and practices along with experience with a rural electric distribution system is preferred, but not mandatory.

  • At least one year’s experience as a fourth-year lineman or the equivalent and have satisfactorily performed the duties of fourth-year lineman or the equivalent, and demonstrated ability and skill in connecting overhead and underground equipment preferred.

  • Must possess a thorough working knowledge of the functions of overhead and underground line equipment along with the use of “hot line” tools.
  • Possess a working knowledge of the overhead and underground line circuits and their voltages within the system.

  • Ability to pass the cooperative’s physical qualification as this job calls for stringent physical requirements in the interest of safety, because the work demands a high degree of coordination, dexterity, endurance and strength.

  • Must possess and demonstrate an attitude that is adaptable to conform to irritating situations when dealing with member/consumers on service and other problems and be a team player to positively promote the functionality of the cooperative workforce.

  • Must represent the cooperative in a very professional manner and maintain a high level of professionalism in all aspects.

  • Must reside within or an approved proximity of our service territory (mainly Daviess, Martin and part of Lawrence County).

Daviess-Martin County REMC is an electric distribution cooperative with approximately 7,000 members, headquartered in Loogootee, IN. Our facility is close to I-69 in southwestern Indiana. Loogootee is 50 miles southwest of Bloomington, IN, 20 miles north of Jasper, IN, 35 miles east of Vincennes, IN and 28 miles west of Mitchell, IN. The beauty of nature abounds in the area, surrounded by forests and lakes. Boggs Park is within 5 miles of the town and has camping, hiking, boating and fishing. The Glendale fish and wildlife park has one of the top fishing lakes in the state and is also a great camping, hunting and hiking area.
