Meter Tech

Job Summary/Description

To provide maximum service to member-consumers and the Cooperative by providing prompt meter testing to REMC equipment and other related duties. 

Essential Job Functions:

Other duties may be assigned to meet the section, department, and Cooperative’s goals and objectives.

  • Responsible for all AMI systems.
  • Installs, tests, calibrates, programs and repairs meters in shop.
  • Install, read and test meters in the field.
  • Thoroughly cleans and repairs meters as needed.
  • Accurately programs all DMREMC meters.
  • Ensures all meters are properly sealed after testing.
  • Accurately documents information on all tested and repaired meters.
  • Sets and maintains single-phase and three-phase metering above 200 Amps.
  • Effectively repairs any damaged meter bases.
  • Performs meter change outs according to company procedures.
  • Investigates voltage and power quality issues with members.
  • Makes service calls on high bill complaints.
  • Helps investigate meter theft and stopped meters.
  • Inspects sub-stations to keep AMR equipment in order.
  • Maintains the Meter Department Inventory.

Job Requirements, Skills and Knowledge Required

  • Must be adaptable to changing conditions and equipment.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Needs good working knowledge of all types of electrical meters and electrical recording instruments.
  • Demonstrates ability in the effective application, installation, testing, and calibration of all types of watt-hour meters and instrument transformers.
  • Must have the ability to follow directions and follow through accurately.
  • Must have customer service skills in order to meet their needs.
  • Supports teamwork by providing effective participation, cooperation, and communication.
  • Must have the ability to work unsupervised.
  • Must have the ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner in the workplace and while representing the cooperative away from the office.
  • Must observe all safety rules and regulations adopted by REMC.

Education and/or Experience

Technical College courses or equivalent for electricity desired. May be required to attend the Hoosier Energy Metering Apprenticeship Program. Previous work experience in the utility industry is desired. Knowledge of local, state, and national codes and regulations regarding instrument metering is desired.

Working Environment

Both inside and outside work. Some overtime and driving to and from meetings and schools as required by Management. The meter technician may work in all types of weather conditions and may be required to work overtime during storm duty or large projects.

Daviess-Martin County REMC is an electric distribution cooperative with approximately 7,000 members, headquartered in Loogootee, IN. Our facility is close to I-69 in southwestern Indiana.
